What grasses am I allowed to grow?

I have a small nursery and I wanted to add a few grasses to my plant selection. I wanted to grow Burmuda, Centipede, Saint Augustine, Seashore Paspalum and Zoysia. The grasses that I have looked at have names like Zenith Zoysia, and Rivera Burmuda that are pantented. What does that mean? Can I only grow grasses with the word common after the name? Are there some named varieties that are ok to grow?

If you are growing the grasses for profit, there are many types that have been around for years that are ok to sell. Many of the older hybrid bermuda’s,(such as Tifgreen and 419), Common types of St. Augustine, and Emerald Zoysia.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking on the internet for a week now and have been unable to find out what grasses are ok to grow besides plain common varieties. I thought that really old varieties might be ok to grow but was not sure. I have emerald zoysia growing right now. Is there a site that lists the varieties that are ok to sell? I want to make sure before I grow a thousand yards of something.

I don’t think a list exsists, but to be on the safe side, stay away from any thing that has been released in the last 7 or 8 years. There have been a lot of Paspalum types to hit the market recently, so all of those might be risky! . There was one type (Adelaide) that was grown in California starting some 20 odd years ago, but I have no idea where you could find it.

I found two websites that have a list of what grasses are unpatented and patented. I will list the unpatented and patented varieties.

I would be fine just growing Emerald Zoysia, that is some nice grass.

Ya, that looks like a pretty accurate list! Yep, Emerald and Tifgreen are probably the two best warm season grasses ever developed. Both have stood the test of time- and still used extensively.
