Verticut St. Augustine grass

I saw an article in the local newspaper indicating to verticut St. Augustine grass. What is verticutting, and how can that be done? What are the benefits? What happens to the grass if it is not verticut?

there’s a lot of research evidence out there that it is stressful for the st. aug. – don’t recommend it.

Verticutting is used mainly on golf courses to increase the density of the turf. By vertically cutting down into the soil in rows, the grass can grow new shoots. It temporarily damages the grass but it comes back twice as strong. It works well with Special cultivars of Bermuda, but never heard it used with St. Augustine. I would not try it.
