Trying to Identify weed

The smaller weed on the right I think is dollar weed and it is growing sparsely in my yard, not much of a problem. But the larger one on the left is growing in huge clumps in our lake. What is it? And does anybody know any herbicides that are safe to use in water to get rid of it?Thanks!

It is the same weed in both cases, dollarweed. I hold an aquatics license in Florida and this is a common problem in our lakes and ponds. Although only one chemical is technically necessary, 2,4-D Amine, I am commonly spraying shoreline grasses at the same time when I encounter dollarweed, so I have it mixed with Rodeo. Rodeo is the Monsanto trade name of glyphosate (Roundup) labeled for aquatic use. There are others available that are the same thing. The Lesco product is Aqua-neat and Aquamaster is somebody else’s product. 2,4-D Amine is sold under many trade names. It is relatively cheap, only some eleven dollars for 2.5 gallons. I mix 64 oz of amine in 24 gallons of water with 32 oz of rodeo and 4 oz of sticker. This mixture on a hot day will turn dollarweed into ash in about 3 days. Again, all you really need for the dollarweed is the 2,4-D with some sticker, but if you also have shoreline grasses, then this mixture is compatible and works well.

Rodeo is the same herbicide as roundup, just labeled for aquatic use. Sticker is a surfactant that helps break the surface tension of water to spread the herbicide out over the leaf of a plant, and when it dries, won’t allow the herbicide to wash off in case of rain, or, in this particular case, water movement in a pond.

About a dozen people use pumps to water there lawn and it takes it directly from the lake. Will this effect there grass? There is also a diverse amount of fish and turtles, will this effect them?

rodeo/roundup breaks down in the environment very quickly. it has no effect on any wildlife. as for people’s lawns, there is no possibility of there being a high enough concentration in the irrigation water to affect anybody’s turf or landscaping. you really shouldnt be getting much of it in the water anyway. rodeo is a foliar spray like roundup.as for 2,4-d, i believe it does have an irrigation restriction, but again, unless there was 80% or more coverage of some really vigourous weed in the pond, you really shouldnt be getting so much of it in the water that the concentration would be high enough to hurt anything.
