summer watering

I have zeon zoysia thats been down for 1 year. The last couple of weeks in Central Alabama the temperature has been in the 90’s with little or no rain. Half of my yard, total size of yard is approx. 1500 sq ft, is looking almost dormant with some areas of green and the other half is still green. I’m watering once a week for an hour but the one side still looks distressed. Any suggestions?

What type of soil? How much water does 1 hour put down?Is your soil hydrophobic?Any organic material in your soil?
If you have sandy soil then once a week isn’t enough.
…
There’s so many different things to look at when you’re discussing watering.Have any images? Dig a few holes, look at the roots and soil and take some pics for people to see.

2 hours twice a week would be a good start.

Its been 95-100 here for the last couple of weeks. I water 3 or 4 times per week at around 5:30AM for 20 minutes at a time.

I think a lot of it is the type of sprinklers you are using too and how much water they flow. I say 20 minutes on mine, but they put out a lot of dang water. Contrast that with some others that I see that are a very light sprinkle in comparison.

Mine are pretty heavy, I deluge the sod, I want the water deep so the roots find their way down to there own sources.

damn, how many inches is 2 hours? That’s about 2 inches for me and probably a $250 water bill.

I do 15 minutes per zone then another 15 minutes per zone back to back on odd days.
30 minutes per zone every other day to make it easy.

I have an irrigation well. The point in watering deep is so the sod will need almost no watering in the future. My st aug used to get a watering once a month and it was fine. It took two years of slowly weaning it off of people water and began to use nature water. 15 minutes a day will work fine but it will need you like a baby to live and continue with that method. Relatively

I was under the impression it is better to water longer on only two days rather than shorter watering over multiple days?

I would agree. I water twice a week for 50 minutes per zone. I think if you water for shorer times it encourages shorter rooting.

Ya but if your soil doesn’t hold any water then you’re just wasting your time and water.

That’s true. I think you should top dress with some Black Kow, MrMumbels. I can tell you it has done wonders with the areas of my lawn that were having some issues. That stuff should allow your soil to hold some more water.

I’m actually going to have these guys come blow compost on the whole lawn.

For top dressing, it says call for pricing. I was wondering if you had done that already?

I haven’t done it yet. I called and asked but can’t remember the price.
