st augustine grass dying

I just bought a home 2 months ago and the lawn was overgrown when I arrived. The first time I treated it, I only had a weedeater and I cut one section of my yard to close to the ground. I thought it would grow back, but since the grass is basically nonexistant and all I see are brown veins of the grass with shoots of green grass coming up every few feet. I don’t know what I should do with it. I live in St. Petersburg, FL. The part of the lawn that is dying is shaded well and I have sprinklers that water once a week in addition to the summer rains. The rest of the yard looks fine.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

you could have (sunny st.aug) that is dying in the shaded areas. IF you have some growth here and there, then the grass will spread and eventually cover. If it is the sunny type, it will continue to be a battle. If it is small patch, replace with new.
