sod over sand

help! I live in coastal alabama and my yard is not much more than beach sand, weeds, and leaves. I was told that I would be able to kill off the weeds with roundup, till in the residue and sod with st. augustine. Does this sound right. My yard is huge and would require God only knows how much topsoil.

Don’t know about St. Aug, but I did just that 100 feet from the Atlantic in coastal NC with 419 bermuda. Only problem is that you have to fertilize more frequently as the drainage is so good a really heavy downpour will suck the nutrients down. Also, sod comes with it’s own top soil and the roots extend down nicely into sand.
