Replacing centiped w/ fescue?

My back lawn of centipede has mostly died out. It’s about 7 years old and in the past has done OK, but I believe between the winter rye I overseeded and the drought I’ve done it in. It is now only about 1/3 living now.
I’m thinking I want to go to fescue & my lawn company suggests just core aerating and slit seeding w/out killing off what centiped is left.
Am I asking for trouble by doing this? Is there a better approach?
