Replacing Bermuda with St. Agustine.

I live just north of Dallas TX. I have huge maple trees in my front yard that produce a lot of shade. I want to replace what’s left of my Bermuda with St. Augustine. Can I just spread dirt over the existing yard and then lay sod, or do I need to till up the old yard first?
