Killing St Augustine and other stuff
Milestone Man – posted 20 July 2001 13:20
I have a lawn of mixed fescue here in Southern California, and after being in our new house about 3 years, I noticed St Augustine crawling over the fescue and spreading. I also see Bermuda near us on a hillside. I want to KILL both. I also have some crabgrass and yellow flowered clover-like stuff I want to KILL. ANy suggestions?

I can kill the St Augustine and Bermuda. There are two ways:
1. Ship your grass to me and I’ll put it down in my yard. IT WILL DIE!
2. I can come to your house and walk on the offending turf and IT WILL DIE
I have a fine crop of crabgrass, and therefore have no experience sucessfully killing it off!

Pull the St. Augustine as you do not have to worry about seeds. This grass does not reproduce a viable seed.
The crabgrass will, but I do not know enough about Fescue to tell you what herbicide is labled for it. So I would just pull the grabgrass … it pulls pretty easily.
As far as the bermuda, I would have to try the same thing as with the crabgrass.
I just simply do not know enough about fescue to proffer an intelligent chemical answer.

I would suggest talking to a chemical supplier or garden center. Some of the weed killers used in St. Augustine will kill the bermuda (and maybe the fescue too) leaving the st.aug. Others will kill the st. aug. and leave the bermuda. . .and maybe the fescue. A chemical supplier or garden center may be able to suggest a chemical that will kill the grasses you wish without killing the fescue.
Good luck,
Scott
