Putting down new sod

I am having a new drain field installed. Once complete, I would like to re-sod the entire from yard with St. Augustine grass.I am unsure how I must prepare the area of the yard that has some existing grass. Must I remove this grass before placing the new sod?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Yes, strip off any exsisting turf, and if the soil is hard- make sure it is loosened up and leveled before laying sod.

Here is a “how to” publication [Preparing to Plant a Florida Lawn]that should answer your questions. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/LH012
