Problem area – shade & root competition

Hi! I’m in Dallas, TX. I have a problem area that I’d like to work on. The area is shady and it gets about 2-3 hours of afternoon sun. The biggest problem I have is root competition. There are 2 big trees planted in that area and roots have come to the surface. The soil condition isn’t great either (clay). The area had bermuda grass on it when I moved in 3 years ago and it’s been taken over by some weeds. I don’t even know they are.
Anyway, I would like to sod or may be seed the area with a new kind of grass. I’ve been doing some research and it seems like Zoysia would do fine in that area. If I do that, what should I do with the root competition problem?
You experts out there, please help!
Thanks in advance!
