Princess 77

My back yard is 2500 square feet of fescue. I was thinking about cutting the fescue to 1″ and aerating the fescue heavily and overseeding with Princess 77. I haven’t heard very many positive stories of people being able to get the seed to germinate. Does anyone have any success with this? Secondly, is it too late in the growing season to attempt establishment from seed for bermuda? I live in Paulding Co. GA, about 30 miles west/NW of Atlanta. I am debating between the Princess 77 and a Rebels variety of fescue. I also have a small beagle/mix puppy that lives in the back yard. I would like to have bermuda eventually take over the yard. Also, will an 18-24-12 starter fertilizer harm the dog if it ins’t watered in fully for a couple of weeks? Thanks for any suggestions.

I can appreciate what you want to do but it is not realistic to expect to plant a crop in an already existing crop and expect possitive results. If you want to establish seeded bermudagrass I would strongly suggest that you KILL the fescue, remove residue and plant bermudagrass seed no deeper than 1/4 ” deep. You should have grass seedlings emerged at least 60 days before the first frost. This is based on establishment of Riviera which is much more winter tollerant.
If you want to tranistion a cool season grass to bermudagrass I would do it in the spring. This will allow the bermudagrass to form a good sod surface that will take winter trafic. If you applied pre-emerge herbicides this spring you should wait until spring to plant seeded bermuda also.
Good Luck
