plymers under sod

Has anyone heard of using polymers on an area before putting down sod? They are supposed to hold water longer and reduce water usage.

Our sod farm tested some polymers, but we found that the material held water, yet the roots of the grass could not adequately draw the water back out of the polymers. Roots massed near the cluster of water-soaked polymers, but did not break up the cluster. In effect it made the existing soil wet and dry at the same time.Properly amending the soil with organic mulch will work better and probably cheaper than this type of product.
