Planting New Seed in Fall?

I took down an above-ground pool and had loads of soil delivered. The area has been seeded, fertilized and covered with straw. However I think it is too late in the season for the seed to germinate. Will this seed survive an Ohio winter and germinate next spring? Or will the seed rot and the area need to be reseeded after winter? Also, I have dogs that run in the yard and in order to keep them from running through the straw and displacing it, is there some kind of netting that I can place over the straw to hold the straw in place? I don’t want a muddy pit in the yard once the snow arrives which is why I need the straw to stay in place.

Fall is the best time to seed cool season grasses. The seed should come up within the next month and be fine over the winter. If it doesn’t come up now… it will, early in the spring.
As for the netting I would be concerned about the grass growing up through it and being ripped out by the roots upon removal. I would opt for a small garden fence type of deterrant. Some wood stakes and chicken wire will help as well. What type of seed did you put down? If you went with bluegrass you may be late. Ryegrass and fescue you should be fine.
Good Luck and don’t sweat it.
