Planting grass

I would like to know if I could plant St Augustine myself or if I need a professional and if so how would I go about in planting grass. For background info: older yard grass seeds were planted but would not grow. Tilled the yard up several times but the seeds would not take on root. Around the house st. augustine grows but will not grow out into the yard. I have been in this house for over 20 years and I guess I am ready to call in a professional if I have to. Thanks
