St. Augustine and borders?

I’m considering having my yard sodded with St. Augustine. One thing that’s sort of nudged me toward my decision is that St. Augustine doesn’t require a solid border in order to keep the grass out of flower beds. I just like the appearance of no border. My question… Is this a good idea? Will I work myself to death trying to keep the St. Augustine runners out of my flower beds? Is there a certain technique, such as raised flower beds, that needs to be implemented in order to achieve the look?
