Planning to plug zoysia

I’m planning on plugging 3″ squares of zoysia in my current lawn that is fescue/weeds. I was thinking about spacing the plugs 10″-12″ apart. I’m looking to do this next May/June.

I was not planning on removing the existing fescue/weeds. I saw there is a 3″ plugging tool. Steps are to remove plug, sprinkle some compost and starter fertilizer to the hole and fill with plug. Do you foresee any problems? Any advice for a first time plugger?

I have a fairly large front and back yard so I can’t afford to sod the entire property. I don’t mind waiting for the zoysia to fill in as long as my process will work.

I have to find grass that I can grow in my back yard. I have two huge oak trees,(shade), and two big dogs. I am going to fence of the yard in sections to allow the seeded and newly plugged area. The grass I choose needs to grow in shade, be able to put up with dog excrements until I hose it and pick it up. And my soil is hard, I have no idea what kind of soil to use to mix into the hard soil.

I changed an area over to Yosia last May. It was Centipede. My neighbor came over with his tractor and plowed the whole thing up. I was going to wait and kill off all grass that was out there, but the plowing killed almost all of it. I found that sprigging the grass in worked best for me. After the area was leveled, I dug trenches about a foot apart. And about a half inch to an inch deep. I dug up shovels of the grass ,using my shovel to make a round pug the size of the shovel pressed down, then lifted the plug out. I took the large plug to a small kiddy pool and using my water hose washed the dirt out of the plug. Use a jet nozzle. Once all dirt was removed , I pulled out the grass and placed it in a water bucket until it was pulled apart. I placed the grass sprigs in the trenches flat roots and all and covered them up. If there were and green leaves I’d leave some of them showing. I went down the trenches laying the grass end on end. Firming the dirt back with my hands. I watered just enough to wet the areas. I did not soak it 30 minutes as others say. I wet the area went it looked dry. In the morning , and again just before nightfall. I’d wet it around noon, if it was hot. In about two weeks the grass was growing. It takes a long time to do this, but by September I had a wonderful start on a new lawn.

I put 10-10-10 on the area after the grass was growing. I filled my Scotts hand spreder twice and covered the area, about 1000 square feet. Then I waited, if it was not a nice green I put a little more and stopped. Then a month or two later I gave it some more. By September the runners were everywhere, and rows touching and some crossing.

You have to patrol the area pulling any other grass out. Make sure no Bermuda gets in there..

I must be honest, I used about 40 large plugs. The grass I tried planting with roots down into the hole did not do as well. Just lay the srings down and the roots right against them, works lots better.

I never used a lawn sprinkler, I’d turn the water on full blast ,holding my finger over the end , and spray the water on. 5 or 10 mintues and go back in the house.
