PALISADES ZOYSIA

I live in Houston. I just had some Palisades Zoysia put in. I did all the research on it but now I am wondering what’s going on.
I have read some posts that say that it is only green like 4 months out of the year. Is this true?
Also, it has been down 6 weeks now (placed March 10) and still looks like it is struggling. I let it root in and then I raked all the existing thatch and dead grass away. There are bare spots now. I fertilized very lightly. Any additional tips on how I can get this to start flourishing and what is my expected timeline for a full green lawn?

it should be green in your market most of the year- zoysia is extremely rare in houston- what part of town are you in? also wondering why you’re raking and dethatching the newly sodded lawn????

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering the same thing about dethatching new sod. The only thing I can think of is that they do not catch the grass when they mow it in the field. My grass had a significant layer of thatch when installed. This may also be partly due to the fact that it was still in dormancy from the winter. There was a layer of wheat colored dormant grass. I raked all that off. I was expecting about 8 months of green from this variety. It was about 20% green upon installlation. Zoysia is starting to catch on in certain newer subdivisions in Houston because of the newer varieties of cultivars are better suited. I chose Palisades. My grass is looking a lot better this week. Maybe I just need to be more patient. I just am getting tired of explaining why I spent double what it costs for St. Augustine to my neighbors to look not so good right now! By next year I hope to have a golf course quality green dense turf! Then they can go kiss my *** when they ask to step on it!

I am in Spring….There are plenty of new homes in the Woodlands that are using Cavalier but its too much maintainance. Fine Bladed varieties are not for me. I chose one that is more vertical and thicker bladed. It’s like the best of St. Augustine and Fairway quality Bermuda. El Toro is another similar cultivar.

iI installed about 20 pallets of palisades last september on a new construction home, started out ok but had an infestation of armyworms that almost took out the entire yard before i got the problem identified and corrected. Had a very early green upand thought it was going good, now its seems to not thickening I fertilized 10 days ago w 32-3-7 20%scu. And we have had ample rain. Any suggestions on fert, or cutting height? I may being cutting to short1-1.5 It has been cool for the past week maybe we just need some hot weaathr to get it growing.

My PaLsades is doing much better now. after raking any dead winter type thatch, I fertized with Miracle Grow. I just came up with the idea myself. Miracle grow seemed to me to be much less likely to burn the lawn since it is mixed with water during application. It has worked great. After 1 week my lawn is showing much more green. If this continues, I should have a full lawn by the end of June. I guess you need to be very patient with Zoysia. It is very finicky with water. I know most people recommend deep watering, but I have found success watering deep once a week and then spot watering during dry afternoons. It really perks up immediately on dry days when watered. There are larger patches of dense grass. I am hopeful it will fill in completely soon.

I PUT DOWN SOME PALISADES ZOYSIA ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO, IT GREENED UP WELL AND QUICKLY. NOW THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME BROWNING IN THE GRASS. IS THIS NORMAL FOR ZOYSIA? IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT I NEED TO DO?
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
