over-seeding bermuda sod?
Bobby2007 – posted 11 April 2007 20:33
My lawn is approx 2 years old bermuda sod located in GA, approx 20 miles N of Atlanta.
There are a few thin areas that did not fill in as much as I was hoping last year.I would like to overseed with a quality bermuda variety but cannot find answers to questions I have…hoping someone here can help.
My local seed supplier suggested BlackJack variety.
My question: Would my Bermuda sod be superior to seed? The only information I have about my existing sod is that it came from a South GA sod farm. My fear is that I will be overseeding with a lower quality bermuda than I currently have. I quess I base this on the wide gap in Bermuda seed prices I have seen.
If this is the case I will try to be patient and wait for the sod to fill in.
Any comments/opinions greatly appreciated!

Most likely the seeded bermuda will not match your sod. What you can do in the bare areas is to rake up the soil. Rake some sprigs out of a good area of the lawn and plant them in the bare areas. Make sure the sprigs have at least 3-4 nodes and leave the ends sricking out and keep them watered

I did find more information by searching bermuda sod. Seems that most sod grown in GA is 419. I agree with your suggestions that the seeded bermuda will not match the existing sod.
I had not thought of using sprigs. I plan to do this versus seeding.
Thank you for your help!!
