Opinions:Softest Grass Variety?

Hello. I am interested in making a grass lawn in a 6′ diameter kiddy-pool on my new york city rooftop. I have been looking for infromation on grass varieties and their relative softness (I am interested in sitting/laying in this pool). Would the members of this site please give me suggestions of their favorite types of grass? The pool will be in full sun days where muggy city temps often reach into the 100’s (but maybe it’s 10ΓΈ cooler on the roof). Thank you,Ethan

Sounds like a great idea to me. I’d go with straight Kentucky Bluegrass sod over a sandy loam. The soil is more important than anything. If you are putting it into a kiddie pool I would poke some holes in the bottom and/or sides for drainage. Maybe put a few inches of peagravel on the bottom of the pool and then add at least 6-8″ soil on top of that. Smooth the soil out, maybe event screed it at the rim of the pool. Make sure its packed but not too hard. Place the sod on top and keep it watered heavily, The drainage will be great, the most important thing is to keep the sod watered, in a “pot” like that it will dry out quickly.
Good Luck and let us know how it turns out. Sounds like a hoot!
