News sod over old lawn?

I am planning on getting St Augustine sod placed in my shady backyard. It currently has a very spotty centipede growing. Question being, do I need to till up the yard before laying the new sod or can I just place it over the existing grass. The soil is rather loose, and soil is being added to portions for grading. Thanks

I am by far NOT an expert on the topic BUT I have seen several people in my neighborhood do exactly what you are talking about doing and with great results. When my lawn died, we removed every last shread of the old lawn before putting down the new sod and believe me that was a job and a half. If it ever happens to me again I will be putting the new sod right over the old stuff. Just my 2cents worth.
