New Zoysia or Hydraseed?

I have to replace my grass/sod per the HOA because it is dead/missing/or taken over by weeds. I live in San Antonio, Texas and my front yard is nearly all direct sun. I am fairly certain we will go w Emerald or Jamur. If I sod I am aware I need to: till, use weed spray (for nut grass and weeds), till again, add 2 yrds of dirt per pallet, lay the pallet then hand water for 2 weeks OR Hydraseed? Can hydraseed be done w Zoysia grass seed? Can it be sprayed/planted in San Antonio in September/August? Can anyone recommend a group that has been successful in this area in doing so? Thanks so much this is clearly not my thing 🙂

I would never seed or hydroseed zoysia. Too much trouble. That’s just me though. I would roundup what you have growing until it’s all dead, then wait a couple of weeks. Then have it tilled up and leveled out. THen lay the sod. While you’re at it, you can dump some good soil or organic matter before you till. I have Jamur and Palisades. I prefer Palisades. I go strictly with organic fertilizers…Milorganite, soybean meal, etc. Water and mow it properly and you should be good to go. Yes, you can lay sod in September..or even later, especially since you’re that far south.

Thank you so much for your response! What’s difficult about Hydraseeding? I thought they would spray and I would water…sounds a bit easier than laying the pallets myself and less expensive, no? I am still researching the process and what their definition of “blend” is, since being on a golf course my choices are very limited.

I don’t have specific reasons or experience to say it won’t work, I just have heard many people’s experiences with trying to seed Zoysia and most seem to say it’s just much better to go with sod. Seeing how slow growing zoysia is, I can see where it would not work so well. If it’s cheap, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try though.

Jamur and Palisades are hybrid and don’t have seed. They are more drought tolerant than Emerald zoysia and grow faster.

the only time you should even think about purchasing zoysia seed is if you are overseeding your established lawn. it will be outgrown by weeds ten fold

Yes, fighting weeds isn’t for the faint of heart. Luckily I like working on the yard and find pulling weeds a good way to release stress.
This past Saturday – Sept 15, 2012 – the 20th week since planting Zenith Zoysia on the front lawn.
