New Zoysia Lawn
brownb01 – posted 27 June 2009 06:49
hello…
I recently purchased a new home and had zoysia put down for the lawn. It was kinda a last minute decision but after some reading it sounds like I will be very happy with the decesion. The entire yard was sodded this week (14 pallets) and I have watered nicely. (maybe too much water? it’s mushy in spots. I am going to not water for a few days, and let it dry up some)
I am curious as to what to expect now, and what I should do. The temp this was week has been 100+ and mid 90’s are forecasted for next week. It still has some slight green to it…but the majority is yellow. How long before it starts to green back up, and should I put down any fertilizer? and if so, what?
thanks everyone for any help or suggestions! Looks like I am really going to enjoy this site!
thanks!

I would not skip a few days of watering. A little mushy the first week is OK. Let it dry up and it will probably die. I have laid 15 pallets of Jamur Zoysia now going into it’s third week. It looks great and has remained totally green the entire time. The first week I watered three times a day. The 2nd week, two times a day. Now I’m watering once per day. Next week I will water every other day. After that once or twice per week. Probably doesn’t matter but what kind of zoysia dis you lay?Hope this helps.

Also, how did your sod look when you got it? Was it nice and green and freshly cut?

Thanks for the reply.
hmmmm…it looked ok when it was laid. It quickly (with 12 hours) turned a funny green, and then yellow. It has now started to green back up. I took just a couple of days off of watering because you couldn’t even walk in part of the yard without sinking, and during those days off..it got a nice rain.
I wish I would have saw your reply last week! All of the sod was delivered June 23rd, and way laid the next 4 days, completing on the 26th. I was watering very heavily for the first week, and then a few days off, and I’ve started up watering again consistently this week. It’s started to green back up and is looking better. I have some that just looks plan dead to me. I’ll give it a few weeks, and then I’ll ask the builder to replace it. He let the sod sit on pallets for 3-4 days, and never watered it while it was on the pallets. (don’t know if that’s a problem) Supposedly it was just cut on that Monday, June 22nd.
I did put down some Scotts starter fertilizer as suggested.
Anything else I should be doing, or anything I could do to get what looks like it’s dead to come out of it? We’ve been in the 90’s the last week or so, but supposed to get back up in the 100’s tomorrow and stay there for awhile.
Open to suggestions!!!
Note sure what kind. I’m in Oklahoma.
thanks!

Sounds like you are doing just right. Sod sitting on pallets for 3 or 4 days is not good and I’m sure that’s why it yellowed out. I had a few small pieces that were located behind my sprinker heads and it turned totally brown and I thought it was dead from lack of water. My wife soaked them with a hose each evening and now it is turning back green. So, I would say on the spots that look dead, soak it. Good Luck.

Could try hand watering the “dead” areas twice a day. Water long enough for water to pool up on the surface of the grass, and then move to another area. Come back and do this two or three times each watering. See if that helps.
The builder should not have left the sod there for that long, but it sounds like the grass is doing alright besides those few “dead” areas.
