New Central Florida Lawn

I live in Spring Hill, Florida, 15 miles from the gulf. The soil is very sandy here and there is no existing grass, just weeds. Especially sand burs. I’m asking your advice on preparing this lawn and what kind of grass to put in. I would prefer it to be green most of the year. Also in the back yard our small dogs will be running,and its mostly shaded. I’m retired and can spend the time to keep it looking nice. I’ve been reading the other posts and it is mind boggling. Lots to consider. Would like to visit other lawns in my area to see the differences in grasses. Links to helpful web sites also appreciated. Thanks to all.

st. augustine. you can always overseed with rye in the winter to maintain year around color

Have you used the grass in Spring Hill? How has is done?

Barbara….I’ve decided to go with some Zoysia Meyer. It seems to have all the qualities I need. It takes a while to grow and do its thing but I will report on here in a few months to let you all know how its doing.

Have you thought about trying Seashore Paspalum? It is salt tolerant, drought resistant, low fertilization, minimal pesticide application. Look into it, might be just what you want.

I soded my front yard in New Port Richey with Empire Zoysia. Oct 2004, it went semi dormant in Jan and Feb. Now it looks great.It stays green through the winter for the most part. It is very slow growing needs to be cut only one time every 10-14 days. The sod is so thick weeds are virtually non existant. Check out sodsolutions.com for more on Empire Zoysia. Meyer should not be grown down here according to the weeks of research I did prior to moving into the new house. I only ammended the sandy soil lightly. I raked in 15 bags of top soil.1200 sq feet. It seems to be fine. I fertilize and use ironite between regular feedings. I have an irigation system set to twice a week. Lately I have not had to use it with the rain in March.
