My Zoysia needs too much watering

I did a lot of research before I soded my front yard with Zoysia. Most articles claim it is drought tolerent and uses less watering. I have to water more than twice as much than when I had just plain old burmuda. I tried to water deep and less often but it just can’t seem to stay plush and green. It quickly startes to look wilty and thin if I don’t water every 3 days. It is about 5 years old now and I am ready to give it up. But I love the soft thick grass. Maybe someone knows what I can do to fix this remedy. I do fertilize every month or two.

I don’t think they recommend a lot of fertlizer on Yosia.

What do your roots look like in the “dead” area? Sounds like my exact problem too. I think it’s nematodes that are eating your roots. Try spraying molasses with a hose end sprayer to get some of the good nematodes back.

Sounds like what I’ve been fighting for years. My zoysia hates the sugar sand soil I have. It needs more organic material to retain water in the sand. Are you stillin Tulsa? What do you have for soil? If it’s sandy, do this.
Cut out a few 12 by 12 squares and drop some alfalfa pellets in the beneath soil. Water the soil and mix it up good to break up the pellets then put the grass back on top. Keep it watered good for a few days. If it’s the same problem I had you’ll see these spots shoot up like they’re on steroids. You’ll also probably see a few mushrooms.
