my st. augustine grass

hi,
I am in need of some advice. I just moved into a house in Houston this past year and found out later that one side of the grass was dead. Chinch bugs got to it so I pulled all the dead grass out. Someone told me that I should do that. What would you have done? I planted some grass from my other side to that side with the bad grass. It started to grow.
Also,I was gone for 3 weeks and it did not rain but 3 times. By the time I got back the grass was brown everywhere. So, I watered it and it started coming back.
I wanted my lawn to be thick and lush and nice looking so I put Bonus S fertilizer in late July. I put ferlizer on before with my hands and just grabbed some and threw it onto the grass. This time though I actually poured the fertilizer from the bag directly on to the grass. Two days later I see a dark brown line where I did that.
Is there anyway that the grass will come back.
What is your advice on that.
Thank-you for your help.
