My New Zoysia Lawn
pyro – posted 26 May 2011 11:02
I replaced our st. augustine lawn on 05/05/11 with empire zoysia. The yard overall looks 100x better. Here are some pictures first from 05/06/11:http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00148.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00149.jpg
Some from today 05/26/11 to show the difference:http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00266.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00263.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00264.jpg
there are two issues i have noticed with the zoysia…in one area of the yard i am noticing there are small blotches where the grass is dying off. at first i thought it could just be where the dogs urinated, however it seems to have gotten worse over the last few days. any ideas?http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00260.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00261.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00262.jpgand lastly, for comparison…what we started with before resodding:http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00046.jpghttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/pyromaniac6565/homes/House/Outside/DSC00047.jpg

Well it’s still early. First it’s dry as a bone in Florida right now if that is where you are at. Keep it watered, if it has rooted in (you can check by tugging on it) then it’s time to put a starter fertilizer down (if you haven’t already). It’s new so give it some TLC (water, some fertilizer). Initial setup of the new grass takes more water then it will when its established.
If you have put down a starter fertilizer already it could also be the reason for the brown spots, sometimes it occurs even in my established zoysia.

Nice dramatic pictures that display exactly why St Ugly is on the way out. I remember a time when I used to spend A LOT of money having my yard treated by the Quote” PRO” Un Quote and all was fine until 2004 or so when they said the weeds I was getting were do to a chemical change in their product that the Gov regulated a change. I was told the weeds I had could not be killed now , they could only control them. I said “…oh…well at 1000 dollars a year I pay you for weed kill that you can no longer do , I could buy a whole new yard of St Ugly every single year” I said “…your Fired” The above picture resembles what happens to all of our St Ugly yards and now we learn about Zoysia.

exactly…there was no use even trying anymore with the st. aug.
now i get people walking down the street that ask all about the grass and want to take their shoes off and walk on it. (albeit a bit akwardly)
anyone have any idea what the dead spots could be from? i have my sprinklers set on 20 min/zone twice a week.

The dead spots are most likely caused by insufficient irrigation in that area. The soil can vary quite a bit as to how much water is needed, but generally 3/4″ per application will provide sufficient irrigation. The typical continuous spray sprinkler nozzle will require 35-45 minutes of runtime to put down 3/4″. A rotary sprinkler can take 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the GPM of the nozzle installed, to put down 3/4″.
The best way to check is put out a lot of flat-bottomed, straight-sided containers all over the lawn in each zone. A bunch of plastic storage containers from the dollar store will work. Run the zone for 15 minutes and measure the level of water in each container. Then you will know how much water you are putting down for each 15 minutes and can determine how long to run the sprinklers for each zone. Make sure the wind is not blowing during your test, as it will affect the coverage pattern.
You should put containers at least every 6 feet. Make sure you test in the brown areas to compare to the areas that are green. You will probably find that the water coverage is not uniform. You may need to adjust spray patterns to correct for this.
A new lawn should be irrigated daily for the first two weeks, every other day for the next two weeks. As of the date of this posting, you should still be watering every other day.

NC has a turf irrigation management system online that provides irrigation recommendations after signing up and putting in your turf and soil type and irrigation calibration.I water everyday. My sandy soil will not hold enough moisture to skip a day.I don’t thin those spots are from lack of water.

Just an amateur thought. Soil can and dose become Hydrophobic (look it up) you may be watering a LOT and the roots in that spot my feel absolutely none of it. Get on your hands and knees and make a hole in the surface soil. just spread the foliage till you have some soil. press a small indent and poor some water in the spot. Does it sit full? Does it drain away immediately?
My soil was Hydrophobic to the point of putting soil in a glass with water …you could not get it to mix to mud. A drop or two of liquid soap and it turns to mud.

Actually I agree with Vivona, sometimes water coverage can cause issues like that in sod. It however might not be the culprit in this situation.
For example, sometimes the heat stress from the sun reflecting off the road impacts the initial couple of inches of my turf. The temperature difference is dramatic from the ashphalt to the yard even though the temperature might be 95 the grass by the road is being hit with a much higher temperature. So it would stress first.
But for your situation, it could be water. It could just be that the sod is new and some sections didn’t get rooted in and thus those are dying off brown. Once the new sod starts growing it will fill in slowly.

update: the lawn is looking great. people stop and ask all the time what type of grass i have.i have the sprinklers set down to 15 min/zone twice a week, and have been cutting it on a “5” with my mower due to some of the pieces of sod having been somewhat uneven, leaving “short” spots.
should i be okay leaving the mower on this setting or should i be cutting it shorter?
everything seems to be going well, and i only had one piece out of the entire yard die off, however it is behind our gate so i am letting it respawn.
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
