My Bermuda is too high!

About 1 year ago I stripped my old lawn and seeded with Scotts Premium Bermuda. For about a year I was using an older model lawn mower that did not cut very low. My lawn seems to have been trained to grow to that height. I have a new mower that will allow me to cut the grass lower, but it leaves brown spots like I’m cutting too low. My question is can I re-train my grass to green up shorter than its current greening height? My lawn is thick and green, I just want it about 1 – 1 1/2″ shorter. Please advise. Thanks.
