mowing height to expedite spread

in order to get Z-52 zoysia to spread faster, should i keep it shorter than 1-1.5 inches or let it grow taller-and, when following mowing height recommendations, do you use the mower height or pull up some grass and measure that.(my mower is set at 1.5 inches) but its a little brown when i cut it-its a brand new mower so i know the blade is sharp)-thanks for the help!
