St. Agustine

I live in Portsmouth Va. (hampton Roads) and I’m pretty sure I have St. Agustine,(are there different types) according to my neighbors. I’ve been told that you can’t by seed. Why? My lawn produces these long stems of seed. So that leaves pluging. when is the best time for pluging.

Its not that St. Augustine does not seed … in fact it does seed. However, those seeds you see are sterile and not viable for producing new St. Augustine.
When to plug is a variying issue I have found. I have read websites and articles suggesting best times to plug, etc, etc, etc. But what I have found here in NW Florida is that I can plug anytime I want and my plugs do wonderful regardless.

My neighbor also has St. Augustine. About 60% of his front lawn did not come back this spring (it was surreptitiously killed while dormant due to a nasty fungal infection during the winter/early spring – he never knew it was dying until it just failed to green up). Anyway, after the problem was discovered and treated, he planted plugs in the dead areas and spread topsoil over the bare spots between the plugs to facilitate growth. It was amazing how quickly this worked. His lawn is immaculate again. Probably doesn’t answer your question about time of year, but I thought it might be worth sharing.
