mixing bermuda with palmetto St. Augustine

Help…I am looking to find out if I can mix Sahara bermuda in with my bad looking Palmetto St. Augustine. I soded it ,and where it gets alot of sun it’s hard to keep alive and green, its nice in the shade and where there is no sun I live in central Florida. Will they mix well or one take over and kill the other.

If you have shade, the St Augustine will win every time. In the sun, the St Augustine will win if you mow at the mower’s highest setting. If you mow at the mower’s lowest setting, the bermuda may take over, but for a long time you will have a weedy looking St Aug mix.

Your St Aug most likely looks bad because you are not watering right.

1. Water deeply and infrequently. When you water, water for an hour or more all at one time to get water deep into the soil. Watering infrequently means that in the cool months, you only water once a month. During the heat of summer, weekly. If your grass looks dry before the month or week is up, then water longer next time. Deep watering will grow deep, drought resistant roots that allow you to go on vacation with confidence.

2. Mow the St Aug at the highest setting on your mower. This high setting will discourage most weeds and also provide enough sugar for your deep roots.

3. Fertilize regularly.
