Hi grass gurus, What kind of grass do you recommend for new home owners that don’t want to spend a lot of time mowing grass? We are in Houston, Texas. I have heard so many different things that I am confused. Also, if we are moving in October to a dirt back yard when should we sod it or seed it?thanks.

You’re already confused and you’re asking for more opinions? Whoa!
If you cannot mow, maybe you should look at ground covers instead of grasses. I have Asiatic jasmine that I have never watered or mowed. I trim it a couple times a year.
If you’re interested in just a low hassle landscape, I would like to put in a plug for organic gardening. With organics you seldom have to worry about when is the right time to apply somethingyou never have to worry about overapplicationdon’t have to worry about whether to water after applying somethingdon’t have to worry about causing more damage than you’re fixing by using productsdon’t have to worry about applying something in the heat of summer
There’s other reasons but that’s enough. I just call it No-Hassle gardening.
Regarding your grass, if you decide on grass, by far the dominant grass used in Houston is St Augustine. If you water deeply, mow high, and use organic fertilizer it is an extremely low hassle turf.
If you want a basic organic turf maintenance tutorial, check out this post on the Turfgrass website.

Shoot bro, I got one even better.
If yard work is not pleasurable to you, but yet you want to have an awesome looking lawn, look not further than:
Looks to me like a huge up front expense .. but after that, appears to be no big deal. Needs no water, no chemicals, no mower, and best yet … NONE OF YOUR TIME!
Of course for me, I find a certain amount of pleasure taking a “mental health moment” doing yard work.
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
