leveling an area to add flagstones and a bench

I really do not want to level a lawn. It is an are where I dug up some bushes in front of the start of my lawn (does this make any sense?). Anyway, it is at a slope. My question is- is how do you level an are like this to add a walking area (flagstones) with e bench. I want the bench to sit evenly.

Rent a sod ripper to get rid of the grass, then rake, rotatille, and tamp the soil down until it is flat and level.
