How to shorten 3″ tall bermuda

I have 3 month old bermuda sod and after going on vacation for 7 days my bermuda grew to about 3″ tall. I tried cutting it shorter but I was cutting too much off the grass blade and creating brown spots that took a few weeks to clear up. My questions is how do I get it shorter again without scalping it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
