Leddie the wonder dog!

I live in Kansas City, I have a 50 lb black lab & a maple tree (with shallow roots) and other trees that prevent a lot of sun light. I planted RTF which came up great at first but I think the lack of sunlight/dog/shallow roots eventually killed off most of the grass. Any suggestions? I would consider sod or seed. Thanks so much.
