I live in north Florida, should I wait till spring before I lay zoysia sod. I’ll be soding a sand playground area…?

You can put down Zoysia sod yer-round in Florida.
Go with Meyer, El Toro, or Emerald. Companion is also a very nice “new” Zoysia, but you’ll probably going to have seed it because it’s dificult to find local farms that sell it.

Check out Empire zoysia. In my area (Dallas-FtWorth), it’s the cheapest one by far. It seems to be getting popular variety in Florida when I googled it.
You could try planting Companion or Zenith seeds. I don’t know what it’s like during winter in Florida so it might be a tad bit too late to get them established before cool weather comes. I’ve tried Zenith. so far i haven’t had problems with them sprouting up but it was a pain in the ass trying to keep the soil moisture for 2 weeks in this dry summer.

I second taking a look at Empire. It’s what we will use here in Dallas. It’s getting huge in FL planned communities too.
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
