lawn only looks good in patches

my lawn looks like it’s dying except in these strange random patches where the grass is green and growing and soft. We’ve had a lot of rain over the last couple of weeks which i thought would take care of it but it hasn’t helped at all it actually looks worse because the little patches that look good are growing long and look great making a huge contrast between them and the rest of the lawn. the lawn just looks ratty! and yesterday i noticed about 5 brown mushrooms over in 1 corner (which i’m hoping is unrelated). the only thing i can think of is last summer we didn’t water (but neither did most of our neighbors and their lawns look fine now).
