Killing Sedge, Kyllinga, Crabgrass

Hi:

Bought a new house. Backyard is 50/50 weeds and Floratam. Probably will just resod or plug (depends upon costs). I assume I need to kill the weeds (sedge, kyllinga, crabgrass and assorted broadleafs) before doing anything.

Questions:1. Do I need to kill the weeds or just turn them under with a tiller?2. How do I kill the sedge, kyllinga, and crabgrass before planting the new grass? I think roundup kills crabgrass and but only top burns the sedge and kyllinga.3. Is it too late to sod here if central florida?

Tilling under weeds and seeds will only add to the existing seed bank in the soil. I am not sure what herbicides are available to homeowners, but I suggest that you spray roundup on the existing turf if you are going to resod, then apply a pre-emergent hebicided before sodding. That way existing weeds will be killed that would otherwise grow quickly into your new turf, and many weeds will be killed as they start to germinate. Pre-emergent herbicides are usually applied at least twice per year. Key times are late summer/early fall, and late winter/early spring to prevent winter and summer annual weeds, respectively from emerging.

As for the sedge and kyllinga…look for a product with bentazon or halosulfuron as the active ingredient. You could probably mix with roundup for better control of sedges. Bentazon if effective against yellow nutsedge, but not purple, and halosulfuron (Manage is the commercial product, but I don’t think homeowners can get it) is effective against yellow and purple nutsedge. Probably kyllinga, too.

After your turf is established, atrazine can be applied for further weed problems. Read the label for temperature recommendations and everything else you should know.

just put out some manage and some image. it will get rid of all the kylinga and sedges. use pre emergent in the spring to prevent crabgrass next year.

i would say do not use roundup, is does a poor job on sedges. Also you will end up having to re sod more of your lawn.

the st aug. will fill in in a season with plenty of N and h2o
