My wife and I are building our first house just outside Baton Rouge, La. that is scheduled to be completed the 2nd week in Nov. We would like any recommendations on grass for the lawn. We are considering Centepede or St. Augustine? We would like any recommendations on what to go with. How late in the year can you sod a lawn? We have a 1/2 acre lot and plan to sod the front & sides and seed the back yard. The front will have direct sun and the back yard will be partly shaded by 3-Pecan, 2-Mulberry, & 2 Oak trees. We have 2 dogs (Husky) that will reside in the back. Thanks for any suggestions.

-You cannot seed St. Augustine.-As I understand it, St. Augustine grows better in the shade than does Centepede.-St. Augustine has better track tolerance.-Centepede seed is very expensive.-Centepede goes dormaint in the winter.
I am sure there are more differences, but those were the basic ones I used when I chose my turfgrass.

I think you would be very happy with Del Mar St. Agustine. I know this response is a little late, sorry. You can buy sod or plugs of Del Mar from Turfgrass America. You can also buy the plugs from some Lowes home improvment stores. We used the plugs on our lawn and they are doing well. They are just now going dormant. We live 50 miles North of Dallas. Good luck with your new home.
