Help identify grass type
joema – posted 07 June 2004 12:26
I live near Nashville, TN and have a mostly fescue 1/4 acre lawn with full sun in front. I have numerous clumps of apparently ryegrass, but am not sure. I just bought the house last November, so don’t know where the ryegrass came from.
The problem is the ryegrass is a lighter color than the fescue and grows much faster, giving an almost weed-like appearance. I don’t know if it’s perennial or annual.
My questions: (1) Is it ryegrass? (2) Any way to tell whether perennial or annual? (3) If perennial, any way to selectively kill it? (4) Any other suggestions?

I added a couple of close-ups of the collar region. I’m starting to suspect it’s dallisgrass, not ryegrass. I think there’s a herbicide that controls that; I’ll do more research.
