We have had very hot humid weater around here lately and a storm came by yesterday. This morning I noticed these hairy wisps attached to my grass and they seem to be attached to the dead blades. I noticed these before on my lawn and never thought anything about it but last August I stared seeing small dead circles of grass in the lawn. These circles filled in with new grass over time but I was wondering if I have a fungus problem?

Does anybody know what these are and could it be related to my dead circle area of last summer. I have a sprinkler system and have treated the lawn for grubs this year already.

I have digital photos but haven’t figured out how to show them in this forum.

those hairy wisps are the signs of a fungal infection. infact, it is the fungus. neat huh?

so short answer, is yes, you have a fungus which is causing disease, most likely dollar spot or brown patch.

is it a problem? that’s up to you. if it is causing enough damage to concern you, get your sample to a local cooperative extension office or plant diagnostic lab for ID and possible recommendations.

Gabe,

Good advise. The ‘hairy wisps” are the mycellium of the disease. The only way to be sure of what disease is to have a lab test it out. Under a microscope its easy to see the distinct features of the different diseases.

My thoughts exactly…………..
