Floratam thatching

I have floratam grass and live in Central Florida. I have recently experienced large brown patches and dead grass. I was told that the grass was too thick and needed to be thatched to thin it out. I am told that this will aid in getting rid of bugs and weeds. Is this true, and if so where do I find a thatcher? Any help is welcomed!! Thanks
