Borax on carpet grass

I put some Borax on some carpet grass that is growing in my St. Augustine lawn. The carpet grass is turing yellow. Should I rake it up, and did I do the right thing? Thanks.

Be careful how much/often, you use Borax. If you don’t have sandy or good draining soil, it will build up and damage your St. Augustine grass. As far as raking out the dead carpet grass, be careful not to damage the sprigs too badly. I use a big, ‘pull behind’ rake behing my lawn tractor and I can end up with garbage bags full of that stuff! It is worth it though! But, it helps the Grass to move on into the empty areas. Try a broom rake and see if that helps. St. Augustine runners are tuff stuff typically. In January you should spray a liquid where you koncked out the carpet grass so it don’t come back in that area ever. It is like, ‘PREEN’. I will get the name of it and get back to you. Carpet grass loves moist dirt. Two other tips to try is Arm & Hammer powder soap. Mix TWO scoops to 1 gallon of water and sprinkle over the carpet grass. you can sprinkle baking soda over the carpet grass also. Experiment on small areas first so you can find out how tolerant your St. augustine will be. How did your Borax do and did it damage any of your ‘good’ grasses? I will get back you you on that liquid that you need to apply to your carpet grass area. This is to only be applied in January to knock out the carpet grass seeds left behind that would try to geminate in the spring. Thanx, Scott
