Hi. I had my yard sodded with Empire Zoysia the end of June and it has been great.

I’m wondering if I should fertilize it before winter –Columbia, SC. I’ve been pouring the water to it all summer and surely that has leached out most of the nutrients that were with the sod on my sandy loam soil, but I don’t want to give it a growth spurt before it goes dormant. It is showing some brown now throughout the green.

What do you think?

I have 2 zoysia lawns and live in Greenville, SC. One is meyer and the other emerald. It is really late to be fertilizing zoysia and I would not recommend it. Roughly August 31 is about the last date and that should be a very light application. You might be OK in Columbia this late, but it is not worth the risk in my opinion.
