Drive for crabbgrass

Has anyone used “Drive” from Lesco for crabgrass? I have Zeon Zoysia in South Texas just about 20 miles north of San Antonio.
Thanks,Paul

I have not used Drive 75DF to control crabgrass in Zoysia, but it is safe to do so. I used it several years ago to control St Augustine in Zoysia.

I am very interested in any reports regarding Drive.
I am flirting with starting a commercial lawn spraying service and using Drive as a primary herbicide. Kansas State Extension and Research says it is the best for crabgrass and foxtail in lawns. Do not know anyone using around here though.
The lawns here are irrigated cool season grasses, fescue and bluegrass. Warm season Buffalo and Bermuda. Generally hot and dry in this area. Primary weeds are crabgrass, foxtails and Bindweed. Really want to get the bindweed and Drive is supposed to do it.
Would also like to know how Drive behaves around ornamental flowers and shrubs. Drift is my concern.

I have used Drive for a few years now.
Side note; Drive actually came onto the market because my course had the first documented case of Acclaim resistant crabgrass. We did alot of Drive testing in the late 90’s. It was originally marketed for use in Rice.
Having said that… I have found:1. Drive is not labeled for ornamental beds.2. Drive only works on plants that are newly sprouting or totally mature. Nothing in between, if you spray any other time you are wasting your money. 3. Drive must have a Methylated Seed Oil type of sticker/spreader. 4. Timing is critical. No mowing two days before or two days after treatment. Leave clippings on the turf for three mowings after treatment.
Read the label carefully. Try out small quantities first. But don’t rely soley on Drive as your main herbicide.
Good Luck…..

Several questions for you.
Do you have problem with Drift? Do not want to kill ornamental flowers. Momma won’t like it.
What is a Methylated Seed Oil type of sticker/spreader? I am planning on dissolving it and putting in a sprayer.
Does it kill broadleaves well. Really want to kill bindweed?
By established you mean, have gone to seed?
Why leave the clippings for 3 mowings?
Thanks Eric

Several answers for you.
Do you have problem with Drift?
No, I’m using flat fan nozzles on large areas of turf. Larger droplets reduce drift, its all in the equipment.
What is a Methylated Seed Oil type of sticker/spreader?
A sticker spreader is an additive mixed into the tank to allow the chemical to spread out on the plant. Try this: On a piece of plastic put a drop of water. It beads up right? Tilt the platic and it runs off completely. Do another bead, only this time touch your finger in dishwashing soap and swirl it in the bead. It should spread out into a thinner puddle. When you tilt the plastic the bead will run but will leave a thin trail behind wherever it was. That is what the seed oil does with Drive. It helps it cover the plant. It also helps Drive get through the waxy coating that some plants have.
Does it kill broadleaves well. Really want to kill bindweed?
I have not really noticed the broadleaf capabilities. Bindweed is on the label. I use Trimec and Confront, Dicamba, and MSMA.
By established you mean, have gone to seed?
Not actually, large plants but not gone-to-seed sized plants. I prefer to treat when they are small, less than 1 tiller. They are easiest to kill postemergent at that stage.
Why leave the clippings for 3 mowings?
Good question. Two reasons. First, the label says so. Secondly, it may have some residual effects that either they want to work on other plants or they want to keep the clippings on a treatment site until after it is “gone”. Similar to spraying fruits and veggies. You can spray but “do not harvest for 40 days after treatment” It may be a legal thing. Like with Confront you cannot use clippings for mulching beds.
I hope this helps………..
I almost forgot Do Not over water. Floratan /Seville all strains of St. Augustine are suseptible to fungus from over…
I am from the north and it has taken me five yrs to learn and undertand seville lawns. No 1…
