Crab Grass – Tall Fescue
Castle – posted 27 December 2003 05:41
I live in NC. I have a new yard that we planted in Spring of 2003. I have several patches of crab grass that I want to kill before it takes over. The grass I have is Tall Fescue. Can anyone help as to what I need to do.
I realize once I get the Fescue established if I keep it tall and thick it usually does a good job of keeping the weeds out.
Thanks.

you would need to positively i.d. the “weed” first. i would have a hard time seeing any crabgrass this time of year. what part of n.c. do you live?

I live in Raleigh, NC The crab grass appeared in summer so at the moment it has turned white/yellow and become dormant. I believe it is crab grass simple because of the shape. It grows in a clump and grows out in the shape of a crab.
Thanks for your help!

Sound like you want a preemergent herbicide in the early spring. Every place is different as to when you apply, but timing is everything. All the preemergents will lose effectiveness with time, so if you get it out too early, it won’t work and the same for too late. If you hit it just right, you’ll look like a gardening genius!

yeah, you have to be careful about the weed i.d.. NOrth Carolina has a great university web site. if it’s truly crabgrass you would want to put a pre-em down say in mid march or so. the other weeds that look just like it, dallisgrass, etc. are not affected by pre-ems. just keep the lawn healthy and well fertilized and watered it should work well.- see that university web site it’s a good one.
