I have decided that I want to go to MSU and take the golf course program. I was wondering if anyone has any information about that. I also am wondering if I can make any money in this profession.

I don’t know anything about the MSU program. Although I’m told it’s one of the best (I’m an alumni of Rutgers U.).

As for earning potential: what part of the country were you going to work in? Salaries vary greatly from zones to zones. Hours worked varies also. If you tell me a zone I can give you salary info. Go to GCSAA.org for excellent career info.

Also know that this is no 9-5 job. We start at dawn and work 8 hours in winter, 10-12 hours in spring and fall and 10 hours in summer. And rememmber that golf courses are open 7 days per week, typically.

Generally, I would recommend that private courses are better wages but job pressure is great and turnover is about 3-5 years on average. Public courses are not great paying jobs but the pressure for superior conditions is less and turnover is reduced. Job burnout is a hazard as well as mother nature, Greens Committees and Golf Pros.

All in all this is not a job, or profession. It technically is a way of life.

But I love it…………………..

Be prepared to work up through the ranks versus “landing” the dream money maker

I graduated from the Two Year Turfgrass Program at MSU in 1990. The program is great and one of the best in the country. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. As for making money I concure with what all the rest of the replies said.

Are you looking for turf industry, or for Golf Course specifically? If its golf course, I suggest you go to GCSAA.org and join. Jobs are separated out by area of the US. Where are you looking to work and what position?

Good Luck……………….
