black residue, dead grass

I’ve been watering in the evening after work, and now find 2-3 foot patches of a this black layer on the soil. Feels almost like tar, with little/no grass in this area. Is it fungus? What do I do? Liz

I suspect I’ll get replies to this stating I’m a loon, but throw some cornmeal on the spots. The bacteria in cornmeal love to eat that moldy stuff. It takes 1-3weeks to work. My neighbor has tru-green come out and maintenance his lawn and they can not explain all of the yellow patches he has in his yard. the only spot his lawn is “tru-green he-he!) is where my yard borders his. I fertilize with a mixture of cornmeal, alfalfa meal,& cottonseed meal. Let the criticism begin! Hope this helps.
