Best type with big Dogs

I’m in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles (hot!) and have 2 large male dogs that have destroyed the Marathon sod I had put down, its just soil now. I need a variety that will grow in this climate and be strong enough to stand up to the dogs running around on it. Also, half the lawn is in shade and half in full sun. Any help appreciated.

Will St. Augustine work in the high dessert like palmdale, CA.?

Forgive the stupid question but is St. Augustine a sod or seed? And will it work in areas like East Tennessee? Thanks a bunch.

St Augustine is a different type of grass. They can produce seeds but they don’t seem to germinate very well. I *think* a common SA many years ago can produce viable seeds but these days, the new varieties don’t.
