Before the warm weather arrives and the grass comes to life again, can anyone tell me how to eliminate Bermuda grass from my Fescue lawn? This stuff is invading the neighborhood and gets worse every year.

GaryFS, Acclaim Extra (fenoxaprop-ethyl) and Prograss (ethofumesate), both by Aventis Environmental Sciences, suppress bermudagrass and are labeled for us in tall fescue, with precautions listed on the labels of each product. A mixture of Acclaim + Prograss was shown by various researchers, especially the University of Georgia’s B. J. Johnson and Bob Carrow, to cause 95%+ injury to bermudagrass in tall fescue, with generally only slight to moderate injury (<30%) to the tall fescue, generally from 4 to 5 applications. Because of label requirements on Prograss, and the need to be cautious, this should only be done by professional turf applicators.

Is there anything available to the homeownerover the counter for Bermudagrass suppression?
Acclaim is about $300 a gallon here. I formerly held a turfgrass and ornamentalapllicator license, but now I’m in another field and cannot buy the restricted products.

blueridge,I don’t know how to say this and be really nice about it, but when you post the same question in several places, we sort of lose focus on the solution. In this case you’re asking a question behind someone else’s question. The webnerd lingo for this is ‘hijacking’ the thread. And I realize you had nearly the identical question as the original poster, so it would seem logical to follow up. And it probably would have been fine if you had stopped there.
I’m not the designated website policeman, but I’ve seen this as a formal policy at work in other places. It really seems to help the folks who are trying to help out when they only have to answer one time.
It is better to open your own new thread with your specific question, which you already did, so thanks!! Either place would have been fine but not both.
If the webmaster thinks I’m out of line, I’ll shrink back – I don’t want to discourage anyone from posting questions.

Sorry for the duplicate post. This was my first time to discover this forum and when I noticed that the thread I replied to was started Jan 2002, I thought it was a dead thread, so I reposted my question as a new thread.

Alas, a dead page. Do you happen to know where I can get current info on that mixture or what their emails are? There is a web page for the university but it will take a while to get to the profs. Thanks.

I was told, last year, by someone I dont remember, to use a solution of borax and water on my bermuda to kill it. I did and checked in a couple of day. No help. However, I forgot about it after that and just today I went over to the spot where I had bermuda and zowie, no bermuda, NONE. So unless some miracle occured, it worked. Didnt hurt my Floratam. It has completely filled in where the Bermuda was. Evidently takes a while.

I should make myself clear about killing the Bermuda. I used Arm and Hammer Borax Soap. About one cup full in a 2 gallon spray can.

Are the areas you sprayed still Bermuda free?

Prograss for controlling Bermuda in St Augustine grass and Asulox for controlling crabgrass.
